CHICO, Calif. (September 7, 2010) - Recently, Klean Kanteen, maker of the first BPA-free metal bottle designed for personal hydration, partnered with the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA), to help them eliminate single-use plastic bottles from all of the ICSA regattas nationwide.
An estimated 25,000 single-use bottles are purchased each season for ICSA regattas. With the help of Klean Kanteen and Sailors for the Sea, a nonprofit dedicated to educating and empowering the boating community to protect and restore our oceans and coastal waters, the ICSA hopes to provide a model for clean regattas nationwide and encourage sailors to move away from plastic altogether.
According to the Sailors for the Sea website, “Recreational boaters have a unique opportunity to help protect and restore the environment they so much enjoy. Sailors have always needed the ocean, but now, faced with issues like ocean acidification, marine pollution, and overfishing, the oceans need sailors."
Klean Kanteen will be providing stainless steel bottles to members of the ISCA at a discount online at www.kleankanteen.com/collegesailing. The ICSA will also require all regatta hosts to provide a suitable water source to replace bottled water customarily purchased by each sailing team at each regatta throughout the sailing season. Collegiate sailors will also also be required to bring their own reusable water bottles to the events.
"Klean Kanteen has always been more than just a bottle company. We are a solutions company, aiming to change the way people think about single-use products," said Klean Kanteen Marketing Director, Scott Rolfson. “This partnership is a way for us push the message about the hazards of plastic waste to a community that plays an integral part in oceanic conservation. We hope it will raise awareness among sailors about the importance of protecting the waters in which they spend so much of their time."
The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) is the governing authority for sailing competition at colleges and universities throughout the United States and in some parts of Canada. The ICSA promotes, legislates, supervises, and provides overall guidance to 7 member regional conferences and affiliated institutions and over 200 member teams.
