Spearfishing the Central Coast of California

Morro Bay, CA
June 2021 | Words and Photos by Matt Foley | CREW: Kai Rogers, Ryan Stojanovich, Alex TT and Matt Foley

When South Lake Tahoe, CA based contributing photographer Matt Foley tells us he’s headed out on the road we don’t ask too many questions. We just eagerly wait for the resulting image set! With shoulder season in full effect in the Tahoe basin Matt recently pointed it south to the central coast with our new Food Solutions collection in tow. He shared a few words with us about the trip and of course an image set that left us stoked for more trips to come! Enjoy and we’ll see you out there.

The original idea was simple, surfing near Morro Bay with my regular crew, but the weather had different ideas. The surf was completely blown out on the Central Coast, but the visibility was still great as we headed south. Someone had the idea to spearfish near Big Sur...everyone was on board, and we piled in the Vanagon.

I was just happy to spend the day out in the water, no matter the activity. Any trip that ends in fish tacos is a win-win.

We spent the entire afternoon in the water spearfishing and ended up being very successful. Making our way through kelp forests and the changing tide left us feeling even more accomplished with our haul. This trip was a perfect way to put the new Klean food gear to the test. Our fish fillets stayed nice and fresh while we prepped a proper bonfire.

We closed out the day with a cookout in the sand with said fish tacos. All in all, a super fun time on the Central Coast capturing some images along the way.
